GREENWOOD, IN – The 2014 HCAC men’s golf tournament gets underway this weekend in Franklin, Indiana.  The men’s golf championship will be a 72-hole format with the first two rounds set for the 6,851 yard par 72 Legends Golf Club in Franklin on Saturday and Sunday.  The final rounds will take place at Eagle Rock Golf Course in Defiance, Ohio on May 3-4.

The conference champion will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships which will be held on May 13-16 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Transylvania University will enter the tournament as the seven-time defending champion and ranked No. 11 nationally.  The Pioneers earned their seventh conference championship, defeating second place Hanover by 36 strokes last spring.

Transy finished second at the Defiance Invitational on April 12-13 at Eagle Rock Golf Course, the site of the final two rounds of the championship.  The field featured all eighth HCAC squads as the Pioneers finished behind champion Hanover by four strokes.

Transy’s Clay Hinton (Elizabethtown, Ky./H.S.) finished sixth at the HCAC championship last spring and will look to lead the Pioneers this spring.  Hinton holds the top scoring average in the HCAC this season (73.1 strokes per round).  Transy senior Jantzen Latham (Central City, Ky./Muhlenberg Co.) placed seventh last spring, also earning All-HCAC honors.

Transylvania has received very consistent play from several individuals, placing seven players on the top ten scoring average list for the conference this season.

Hanover’s Robert Bader (Louisville, Ky./St. Xavier), Mount St. Joseph’s Matt Steins (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle), and Rose-Hulman’s Sanders Park (Alpharetta, Ga./Milton) join Transy’s Hinton and Latham as returning All-HCAC selections from a year ago.

The top eight finishers after the four rounds are complete will earn All-HCAC honors.  The top freshman finisher will receive the Freshman of the Year award.  Action will get underway Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 AM.
