GREENWOOD, IN – The 2016 HCAC men’s golf tournament gets underway this weekend in Seymour, Indiana. The men’s golf championship will be a 72-hole format with the first two rounds set for the 6,724 yard par 72 Shadowood Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday. The final rounds will take place at Honeywell Golf Course in Wabash, Indiana on April 30-May1.
The conference champion will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships which will be held on May 10-13 in Rochester, New York.
Transylvania University will enter the tournament as the nine-time defending champion. The Pioneers earned their ninth conference championship, defeating second place Mount St. Joseph by 32 strokes last spring.
Transy led the HCAC field at the Manchester Invitational last weekend. The Pioneers won the event that featured all eight HCAC teams, finishing 25 shots ahead of second place Mount St. Joseph. It was the only event this spring season the Pioneers competed against fellow conference foes.
Transy’s Nicholas McCarthy (Nicholasville, Ky./East Jessamine) finished second at the HCAC championship last spring and is one of two returning All-HCAC performers for the Pioneers. McCarthy ranks second in the HCAC in scoring this season, averaging 73.6 strokes per round. Senior Jeff Meade (Ashland, Ky./Paul Blazer) leads TU’s lineup and the HCAC in scoring average, carding 72.7 strokes per round.
Transylvania has received very consistent play from their whole lineup this season, placing all five players on the top 15 scoring average list for the conference this season.
Rose-Hulman’s Sanders Park (Alpharetta, Ga./Milton), MSJ’s Eric Hensler (Fairfield, Ohio/H.S.) and Transy’s Hunter Cloud (Lexington, Ky./Catholic) join McCarthy as returning All-HCAC selections.
The top eight finishers after the four rounds are complete will earn All-HCAC honors. The top freshman finisher will receive the Freshman of the Year award. Action will get underway Saturday at 11:00 AM and Sunday at 9:30 AM.
