Transylvania Claims HCAC Mens Soccer Tourney Title
LEXINGTON, KY - Transylvania defeated visiting Hanover, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon to pick up the school's seventh HCAC men's soccer tournament championship. The top-seeded Pioneers (14-3-1) earn another trip to the NCAA Division III men's soccer tournament with the win.
Transy jumped out to a 1-0 lead early. Junior midfielder Tony Spero (Lexington, Ky./Dunbar) found the back of the net in the 16th minute of play thanks to an assist from senior Jason Fairless (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers). Fairless made the score 2-0 in the 73rd minute, converting a penalty kick.
Hanover's Jake Stawick (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) finally got the Panthers into the scoring column, netting an unassisted goal late in the second half.
Transylvania will learn of its first opponent in the NCAA tournament on Monday. The tournament is scheduled to begin on Nov. 11.
