Transy Men Meet Capital, While Women Face Denison
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The NCAA Division III Soccer
Committees announced today the field for the 2009 M
en's and Women's NCAA Division III Soccer Championships.
Transylvania's men's soccer team will travel to Capital on Thursday
to open NCAA Division III Championship action while the women's
team will face Denison Saturday in a match at Otterbein
College.
Coach Brandon Bowman's men's team (14-3-1), riding
an 11-match win streak, is coming off the Heartland Conference
Tournament championship. They meet Capital (16-4-2) in a play-in
game at 1 p.m.
The winner gets to travel to Ohio Wesleyan (18-1-2) for the
second round on Sunday. The time for the second-round match will be
announced.
Transy will be playing in the NCAA tourney for the fifth time in
six years.
The men's field has 59 teams, including 39 automatic qualifiers, 17 at-large picks, and three independents. Capital won the Ohio Athletic Conference's automatic bid while Ohio Wesleyan was an at-large pick from the North Coast Athletic Conference.
Coach Mike Fulton's women's team (13-6-1) will go to Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, on Saturday to tangle with Denison (15-3-1) at 1:30 p.m. The Pioneers dropped a 2-0 decision to Denison on the road in September.
The winner of that match would face the Otterbein
(18-1-1)-Frostburg State (18-3-4) winner on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Denison was one of 21 at-large teams selected to the women's
field. A total of 40 teams won automatic bids with conference
championships, including HCAC tourney winner Transy. Another two
independent teams were chosen for a total women's field of 63
teams.
Transy is in the women's NCAA field for the second time. The Pioneers' first appearance was in 2006.
