GREENWOOD, IN – The Transylvania men's soccer program earned the outright HCAC Championship for the seventh time in program history and secured the top seed for the conference tournament. The top-seed Pioneers will tangle with No. 4 Earlham in one semifinal, while second seeded Rose-Hulman will host No. 3 Mount St. Joseph in the second semifinal.
Transy clinched the outright title with a 1-0 victory over Anderson on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Christian King (Nicholasville, Ky./East Jessamine) scored the game winning goal in 82nd minute. King found the back of the net after receiving an assist from Kyle Newman (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell Co.) to secure the conference title. The Pioneers finished the regular season with an 11-4-3 overall record and an 8-0-1 mark in conference play.
Transylvania will face Earlham at 2:00 PM Tuesday afternoon in the semifinals. The Pioneers pulled out a 2-1 overtime win over the Quakers back on October 12. Ethan Collins (Lawrenceburg, Ky./Anderson Co.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime finding the back of the net in the 93rd minute of play. Earlham finished the season 5-12-1 overall and 4-4-1 in conference action.
Rose-Hulman (14-5, 8-1 HCAC) and Mount St. Joseph (7-11, 5-4 HCAC) will meet in Terre Haute for the second men's semifinal. The Engineers defeated the Lions 3-1 when the two squads met in Cincinnati on October 1. That victory started RHIT's current nine match winning streak. This is MSJ's first ever appearance in the HCAC men's soccer field. Action between the Engineers and Lions will get underway at 7:00 PM Tuesday.
The winner of the conference tournament will earn the conference's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III tournament that is slated to begin on November 10. The highest remaining seed after the two semi-finals will host the conference tournament final at 1:00 PM Saturday.
