RHIT’s Vatterrodt & Schiff & Transy’s Sizemore Claim Men’s Soccer MVPs
GREENWOOD, IN – Rose-Hulman's Clint Vatterrodt (Bloomington, Ill./University) and Mike Schiff (Martinsville, Ind./Mooresville) and Transylvania's Evan Sizemore (Versaille, Ky./Woodford Co.) have been named the 2011 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Most Valuable Players on offense and defense respectively. Vatterrodt and Schiff helped guide the Engineers to their second HCAC men's soccer tournament title, while Sizemore led the Pioneers to their seventh HCAC crown with an 8-0-1 conference mark.
Vatterrodt has led the Rose-Hulman offense this season, leading the conference in points, goals, and assists. The senior forward has scored 21 goals (5th nationally) and added 10 assists to lead the Engineers offense that ranks first in the HCAC in scoring with 59 goals this season. In conference matches, Vatterrodt led the league with a conference record 11 goals and 24 points scored in nine matches.
Schiff and Sizemore were named Co-Defensive Most Valuable Players for their efforts this fall. Schiff anchored the Engineers defensive unit during the season as the Engineers allowed only five goals in league play. The sophomore back was the star of the Rose defense that allowed only 16 goals in 21 matches this season, including 10 shutouts.
Sizemore was instrumental in Transylvania boasting the HCAC's top defensive unit in 2011. The Pioneers allowed only two goals in HCAC action to lead the conference. The sophomore back helped the Transy defense limit its opponents to only 13 goals in 19 matches, including a HCAC-best 12 shutouts.
Rose-Hulman's Andrew Bartush (Granger, Ind./Penn) has been selected as the 2011 HCAC Freshman of the Year. Bartush, a back for the Engineers, alongside Schiff helped the RHIT defense rank among the leaders of the HCAC during the 2011 season. Offensively, Bartush contributed one goal during the campaign.
Rose-Hulman's Sean Helliwell has been named the 2011 HCAC Coach of the Year, earning his third honor as the head man for the Engineers. He has led Rose-Hulman to a 16-5 record this season, including the school's second trip to the NCAA Division III tournament.
Fourteen players join Vatterrodt, Schiff, and Sizemore as All-HCAC First Team members. Those players include Anderson's Austin Fridley (Sr., Anderson, Ind.), Defiance's Kevin Elson (Sr., Wauseon, Ohio), Franklin's Drew Ferguson (Jr., Louisville, Ky.), Hanover's Jake Stawick (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind.) and Matt Flora (Fr., Scipio, Ind.), Manchester's Dian Radev (Jr., Burgas, Bulgaria) and Corey Brueggeman (Sr., Loveland, Ohio), Mount St. Joseph Chris Corbett (So., Cincinnati, Ohio), Rose-Hulman's Will Senat (So., Edmond, Okla.), Tim Hollingshead (Sr., St. Peters, Mo.), and Drew Miller (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio), and Transylvania's Christian King (So., Nicholasville, Ky.), Peter Mikhail (Sr., Park Hills, Ky.), and Tony Spero (Sr., Lexington, Ky.).
