GREENWOOD, IN - Manchester opened HCAC play with a narrow 1-0 win over Hanover Saturday. The Spartans (3-8, 1-0 HCAC) scored early in the contest and relied on a stout defense to hold off the host Panthers (4-4-2, 0-1 HCAC).
Manchester's Andrew Gray (Anderson, Ind./H.S.) found the back of the net in the 33rd minute to give the black and gold a lead they would not surrender.
Senior goalkeeper Grant Noakes (LaPorte, Ind./H.S.) registered eight saves in the win as the Spartans were outshot by the Panthers 18-5 on the afternoon.
Four other HCAC openers took place on Saturday. Transylvania opened the conference schedule with a 3-0 defeat of Anderson, while Rose-Hulman beat Bluffton 5-0 in Terre Haute.
Defiance scored a 1-0 defeat of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, giving the Jackets their first win of the season.
Franklin and Earlham battled to a 1-1 tie Saturday as the Quakers knotted the match in the 83rd minute of play.
Conference action continues this week with matches slated on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday.
