Transy Beats Anderson to Earn HCAC Men’s Soccer Tourney Title
LEXINGTON, KY – Transylvania University defeated visiting Anderson University, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon to pick up the school's seventh HCAC men's soccer tournament championship under head coach Brandon Bowman. The No. 1 seed Pioneers (16-1-2) earn the school's first trip to the NCAA Division III men's soccer tournament since 2010 with the win.
Anderson scored first in the match, but the next four goals would belong to the Pioneers.
Eric Froschauer (Union, Ky./Ryle) tied the contest when he headed in a free kick off the foot of Evan Sizemore (Versaille, Ky./Woodford Co.) at 37:54. The match was tied 1-1 at halftime.
Froschauer's second goal of the game and seventh of the year came in the 55th minute when he faked past a pair of defenders and finished near post. The junior forward was named the HCAC Tournament MVP for his efforts.
HCAC scoring leader Kyle Smith (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) put the contest away for the Pioneers with two second-half goals. His 17th goal of the season came off a Froschauer assist and made it 3-1 at the 77:39 mark. He completed the scoring with his 18th goal with under three minutes to play, converting a pass from Christian King (Nicholasville, Ky./East Jessamine).
Transy dominated in terms of shots, taking 23 overall and 13 on goal compared to five and three for the visitors.
The Pioneers, unbeaten in their last 13 matches, will learn of its first opponent in the NCAA tournament on Monday. The tournament's first/second rounds are scheduled for November 8-11.
