LEXINGTON, KY - Transylvania's men's soccer
team will travel to Wheaton (Ill.) Friday to open play in NCAA
Division III National Championship.
The Pioneers (16-1-2), champions of the Heartland Conference, will face the Thunder (15-3-3), who captured the College Conference of Illinois Wisconsin tournament title with a penalty kick decision over North Park. It was Wheaton's first CCIW title since 2009.
Transy is making its first NCAA appearance since 2010 and its seventh under head coach Brandon Bowman.
The Transy-Wheaton winner will advance to second-round play on Saturday, facing either Ohio Wesleyan (13-2-5) or Centre (14-4-2). Ohio Wesleyan, a member of the North Coast Athletic Conference, and Centre, representing the Southern Athletic Association, were both at-large picks to the 62-team tourney.
Transy and Wheaton, ranked No. 16 in the nation, each received automatic bids. Ohio Wesleyan is ranked No. 19.
Transy is enjoying its best season since posting a 16-3-3 mark in 2009, when it advanced to the NCAA Tournament and made the Elite Eight. The Pioneers are also within grasp of its winningest season in school history. The 2003 team was 17-1-2.
The time for Friday's match will be announced. Saturday's game will begin at 6 p.m.
