Pioneers Strive for Seventh Consecutive HCAC Men's Tennis Championship
INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The 2009 men's tennis season will come to a close this weekend, as the HCAC championships will be held this Saturday and Sunday in Indianapolis . This year's tournament will be hosted by Anderson University and held at the West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis . Transylvania will look to claim the school's seventh straight HCAC championship, earning the conference's automatic qualifier for the NCAA tournament that begins May 8.
The Pioneers (8-0 HCAC) enter the 2009 tournament riding a 51 match win streak in conference play. Transy has been led by freshman Will Palmer (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) at the No. 1 singles and doubles position this spring, posting a 10-0 overall conference record. Teaming up with Palmer at the No. 1 doubles position has been junior Kyle Clayton (Owensboro, Ky. /Catholic) . Clayton has racked up a 10-1 conference record, including his efforts at No. 3 and 4 singles. Junior Lee Gammon (Chattanooga, Tenn. /Baylor) and freshman Keith Henderson (Lexington, Ky./Lafayette) have been solid all season long for the Pioneers. Gammon finished 4-1 at No. 1 and 2 singles and posted a 6-1 mark in No. 1 and 2 doubles action. His doubles partner Henderson finished 12-2 on the conference season, finishing 5-1 in singles play. Transy defeated their first round opponent, Bluffton (1-7 HCAC), 9-0 during the regular season.
Rose-Hulman (7-1 HCAC) will look to dethrone Transylvania as the supreme team in the HCAC this weekend. Rose and Transy met back on March 14, with the Pioneers claiming a 5-1 win over the No. 2 Engineers. RHIT has been led by juniors Scott Grubbs (Wildwood, Mo. ) and Michael Schoumacher (Memphis, Tenn. ) this season. Grubbs has posted a 5-2 conference mark at the No. 1 singles position and a 7-1 record at No. 1 doubles. Schoumacher finished 6-1 at No. 2 singles and teamed with Grubbs in doubles action.
Defiance (6-2 HCAC) will look to pull off a string of victories to claim the conference crown. Freshman Trevor Ault (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) and sophomore Austin Kleman (Sidney, Ohio /H.S.) have been steady for the Jackets this season. Ault finished the season with a perfect 15-0 record at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles, while Kleman finished 10-4 overall at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles. Defiance 's two conference losses were to the top two seeds in the conference, Transylvania and Rose-Hulman. DC fell to Transy 6-3, while falling to Rose 5-4.
Action will get underway Saturday morning at 8:00 AM, with the championship match being held Sunday morning.
