Transy's Palmer Selected HCAC Men's Tennis Most Valuable Player

GREENWOOD , IN - Transylvania University's Will Palmer (Lexington, Ky. ) has been named the 2009 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Most Valuable Player. The freshman was selected by the conference's head tennis coaches and is the fourth Transylvania player to receive the award. Former players Ethan Busald, Jody Mitchell, and Parker Gregory received the honor previously.

Palmer compiled a 24-7 record during the 2009 regular season and led the Pioneers to their seventh consecutive HCAC championship. He was 14-1 against conference competition this season and capped the year with a 4-1 showing at the HCAC tournament. Palmer was 12-2 overall at No. 1 singles and 6-0 in HCAC matches.

The HCAC has also announced the selection of Palmer as the 2009 HCAC Freshman of the Year. Palmer is the second men's tennis player to sweep the Freshman of the Year and MVP voting. Transy's Ethan Busald captured both honors during the 2002 season.

Thirteen other players join Palmer on the All-HCAC team. Anderson University's Kai McCurdy (Sr., Anderson , Ind. ) , Defiance's Tyler Ault (Sr., Oregon , Ohio ) and Austin Kleman (So. Sidney, Ohio) , Franklin's Matt Hamm (So., Batesville, Ind.) , Hanover's Steve Craig (Jr., New Albany, Ind.) , Sam Pollom (Jr., Danville, Ky.) , and Ben Voorhorst (So., Warsaw, Ind.) , Rose-Hulman's Scott Grubbs (Jr., Wildwood, Mo.) and Michael Schoumacher (Jr., Memphis, Tenn.) and Transylvania's Lee Gammon (Jr., Chattanooga, Tenn.) , Kyle Clayton (Jr., Owensboro, Ky.) , Keith Henderson (Fr., Lexington, Ky.) , and Dalton Main (Jr., Louisville, Ky.) have been named to this year's team.

Also receiving special recognition this season is Transylvania head coach Chuck Brown . The eight-year coach guided the Pioneers to their seventh consecutive HCAC championship in 2009. Brown's team posted a 17-3 overall record and 8-0 record against conference opponents. His teams have won 48 straight regular season HCAC head-to-head matches and five singles players were named to the All-HCAC team this season. The award is Brown's seventh consecutive honor as men's tennis coach at Transylvania.
