Men's Tennis Report (Week 5) - Hanover Begins HCAC Season with 2-1 Mark

GREENWOOD, IN- The HCAC men's tennis conference schedule got in full swing last week as six conference matches took place.  Hanover met Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati last Tuesday and hosted Rose-Hulman and Defiance in a tri-match Saturday afternoon.  Rose also met Transylvania and Mount St. Joseph on Sunday to complete the week's league schedule.

Hanover (2-5, 2-1 HCAC) posted a 9-0 win over Mount St. Joseph before splitting Saturday's doubleheader with Rose (5-3 loss) and Defiance (5-4 win). Hanover's Steven Gillam (Fishers, Ind./H.S.) finished the week 3-0 at No. 1 singles and 2-0 at No. 1 doubles.

Rose-Hulman (7-5, 4-2 HCAC) earned two splits during its busy week, defeating Hanover and Mount St. Joseph and falling to Transylvania and Defiance.  Senior Michael Schoumacher (Memphis, Tenn./White Station) went 4-0 at No. 3 singles and also became the all-time leader in doubles wins at Rose-Hulman. Schoumacher teamed with Scott Grubbs to post his school record 49th career doubles win vs. Transylvania.

Defiance (1-6, 1-1 HCAC) earned its first win of the season, defeating Rose-Hulman 5-4 Saturday.  The Yellow Jackets nearly pulled off the sweep before dropping a 5-4 decision to host Hanover.  Trevor Ault (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) was a perfect 2-0 at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles to lead the Jackets.

Transylvania (2-2, 1-0 HCAC) ran its HCAC win streak to 55-straight with a 5-4 win over Rose-Hulman Sunday.  Transy's Joseph Glass (Paris, Ky./Bourbon Co.) provided some drama in the match, coming back from a set down to win at No. 5 singles 10-8 in a super tie-breaker, clinching the decision for the Pioneers.
