Transylvania Notches Eighth Straight HCAC Tennis Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Transylvania University’s men’s tennis team claimed the school’s eighth consecutive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference team championship on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers rolled to a perfect regular season conference record (7-0) to earn the top seed for this weekend’s championship and claimed the tournament title at West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis
In Sunday’s championship match with Rose, the Pioneers held on for a 5-2 victory. Transy posted wins at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Will Palmer (Lexington, Ky.) and Kyle Clayton (Owensboro, Ky.) knocked off Scott Grubbs (Wildwood, Mo.) and Michael Schoumacher (Memphis, Tenn.) of Rose-Hulman at No. 1 doubles 8-5, while Lee Gammon (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Trevor Scott (Owensboro, Ky.) handed Ben Paras (Tucson, Ariz.) and Alex Gumz (Palatine, Ill.) a loss at No. 2 doubles 8-4.
In singles play, Transylvania earned wins at No. 1, 2, and 4 singles. Palmer earned a win at No. 1 singles over Paras 6-3, 6-1, Gammon knocked off Grubbs at No. 2 singles, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, and Dalton Main (Louisville, Ky.) handed David Becerra (Brownsburg, Ind.) a defeat at No. 4 singles, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1.
The two Rose-Hulman victories came from No. 3 singles and doubles positions. The pair of Seth Hendrickson (Crawfordsville, Ind.) and David Becerra defeated Dalton Main and Joseph Glass (Paris, Ky.) of Transy in doubles, 8-2. Schoumacher earned the lone singles win for the Engineers, defeating Kyle Clayton, 6-1, 7-5.
With claiming the conference title, Transylvania has earned the conference’s automatic bid to play in the NCAA Division III tennis championships beginning May 14. It will be the school’s fourth straight appearance in the Division III NCAA tennis tournament.
