Mount’s Sandy Berry Named HCAC Men’s Tennis MVP

GREENWOOD, IN – College of Mount St. Joseph's Sandy Berry (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) has been named the 2011 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Most Valuable Player. The junior was selected by the conference's head tennis coaches for the first time and is the first Mount St. Joseph player to receive the award, ending a nine-year MVP run by Transylvania University.

Berry compiled a 24-2 record during the 2011 regular season and led the Lions to a seventh place finish in the league standings.  He was 14-2 against conference competition this season, finishing 7-1 overall at No. 1 singles and doubles.

The HCAC has also announced the selection of Hanover's Peter Tratt (DeWitt, Mich./H.S.) as the 2011 HCAC Freshman of the Year.  Tratt led the Panthers to a 3-5 mark in conference play and earned the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament.  The freshman posted a 4-3 record at No. 1 singles and a 5-2 mark at No. 1 & 2 doubles during the regular season.

Twelve other players join Berry and Tratt on the All-HCAC team.  Anderson's Drew Lovern (Fr., Indianapolis, Ind.), Defiance's Trevor Ault (Jr., Oregon, Ohio), Earlham's Hank Levin (So., Dallas, Tex.), Andrey Gavrilov (Fr., Yaroslavl, Russia), and Brad Maisey (So., Mt. Maunganui, New Zealand), Franklin's Matt Hamm (Sr., Batesville, Ind.), Rose-Hulman's Ben Paras (So., Tucson, Ariz.), David Becerra (Sr., Brownsburg, Ind.) and Alex Gumz (Sr., Palatine, Ill.) and Transylvania's Will Palmer (Jr., Lexington, Ky.), Keith Henderson (Jr., Lexington, Ky.),  and Patrick Corbett (Jr., Louisville, Ky.) have been named to this year's team.

Also receiving special recognition this season is Earlham head coach Adam Van Zee. The three-year coach guided the Quakers to their first ever HCAC championship in 2011.  Van Zee's team posted a 17-3 overall record and 7-1 record against conference opponents.  The Earlham men's tennis team became the second team in Earlham history to earn a berth into the NCAA tournament, joining the 1998 men's soccer squad.  The award is Van Zee's first honor as men's tennis coach at Earlham.
