Men's Tennis Report (Week 11) - MSJ Moves Into HCAC Tournament Hunt

GREENWOOD, IN- The College of Mount St. Joseph went 2-0 in HCAC action last week and moved into position to earn one of the six spots in next weekend's HCAC tournament in Indianapolis.  The Lions (7-5, 3-4 HCAC) currently stand in a tie for fifth in the standings with two matches remaining on the schedule.

MSJ received a great effort from senior Sandy Berry (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) during the two wins.  The defending HCAC Player of the Year went 4-0 in singles and doubles action in wins over Anderson and Manchester.

In MSJ's 6-3 win at Anderson, Berry notched an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles and a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 1 singles. 

Berry earned an 8-3 doubles win and a 6-0, 6-3 singles win at the No. 1 positions in an 8-1 win over Manchester Saturday.

Mount currently stands alongside Hanover and Anderson in the race for the league tournament.  One of the three schools will be on the outside looking in if there is a three-way tie for the final two slots.

MSJ closes the schedule against Bluffton and Transylvania.

In other conference action...Earlham (16-1, 8-0 HCAC) won its 13th straight match and moved to 8-0 in league play with a 5-0 win at Anderson Saturday.

Earlham's Anton Bartashevich (Moscow, Russia/International) earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles and also posted an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles in the win.

The Quakers can wrap up the HCAC title and top seed in next weekend's tournament with a win over Transylvania Wednesday.

Transylvania (8-4, 6-0 HCAC) notched a 6-3 win over Defiance in its only action last week, clinching a spot in the upcoming league tournament.  The Pioneers need wins over Earlham, Bluffton, and Mount St. Joseph this week in order to win another league crown.

Franklin (8-8, 6-2 HCAC) also locked up a HCAC tournament berth with an 8-1 win over Bluffton.  The Grizzlies currently occupy the No. 3 spot in the standings and will close the conference schedule at home against Anderson Saturday.
