Mount’s Sandy Berry Earns Second-Straight HCAC Men’s Tennis MVP

GREENWOOD, IN – College of Mount St. Joseph’s Sandy Berry (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) has been named the 2012 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Most Valuable Player. The senior was selected by the conference’s head tennis coaches for the second-straight time.

Berry compiled a 22-4 record during the 2012 regular season and led the Lions to a sixth place finish in the league standings.  He was 14-2 against conference competition this season, finishing 8-0 overall at No. 1 singles and 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.

The HCAC has also announced the selection of Earlham’s Anton Bartashevich (Moscow, Russia/International) as the 2012 HCAC Freshman of the Year.  Bartashevich led the Quakers to a 9-0 mark in conference play and earned the school’s second-straight conference tournament title.  The freshman posted an 8-0 record at No. 1/2/3 singles and a 7-0 mark at No. 1 doubles during the regular season.

Twelve other players join Berry and Bartashevich on the All-HCAC team.  Anderson’s Drew Lovern (So., Indianapolis, Ind.), Defiance’s Trevor Ault (Sr., Oregon, Ohio), Earlham’s Hank Levin (Jr., Dallas, Tex.), Andrey Gavrilov (So., Yaroslavl, Russia), and Brad Maisey (Jr., Mt. Maunganui, New Zealand), Franklin’s Blake Wareham (Jr., Carmel, Ind.) and Ryan Hammer (Fr., Greenwood, Ind.), Hanover’s Brandon Ramsey (So., Centerville, Ind.), Rose-Hulman’s Ben Paras (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.) and Devon Fritz (Jr., Lakeside, Cali.) and Transylvania’s Will Palmer (Sr., Lexington, Ky.) and Keith Henderson (Sr., Lexington, Ky.) have been named to this year’s team.

Also receiving special recognition this season is Earlham head coach Adam Van Zee. The four-year coach guided the Quakers to their second-straight HCAC championship in 2012.  Van Zee’s team posted a 19-1 overall record and 9-0 record against conference opponents.  The Earlham men’s tennis team became the first team in Earlham history to earn back-to-back berths into the NCAA tournament.  The award is Van Zee’s second honor as men’s tennis coach at Earlham.
