Men's Tennis Report (Week 7) - Earlham Takes Control of HCAC Title Race
GREENWOOD, IN - Earlham College took control of the HCAC title race with a 3-0 mark in league matches last week. The Quakers (9-5, 4-0 HCAC) earned wins over Transylvania, Mount St. Joseph, and previously unbeaten Rose-Hulman.
Earlham's Anton Bartashevich (Moscow, Russia/International) finished 3-0 at the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles positions to help the Quakers defeat Transylvania 8-1, Mount St. Joseph 9-0, and Rose-Hulman 8-1.
Earlham is ranked No. 10 in the ITA Central Region and Bartashevich is now ranked No. 16 in singles.
The Quakers will travel to Case Western Reserve for a non-league match Saturday.
In other HCAC action...
Rose-Hulman (6-6, 6-1 HCAC) suffered its first conference loss, finishing the week 1-1 in league play. The Engineers swept Manchester 9-0 prior to an 8-1 road loss at Earlham Sunday. Rose will close the conference schedule on April 23 at Anderson. RHIT has locked up a spot in the upcoming HCAC tournament.
Defiance College (9-7, 4-1 HCAC) went 2-0 during the week, earning road wins over Anderson and Hanover. James Demeo (Oregon, Ohio/Clay) won a pair of matches at the No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles positions during the week to lead the Jackets. Defiance beat Anderson 7-2 and Hanover 5-4, running its win streak to four straight.
Franklin College (5-4, 3-2 HCAC) notched a pair of league wins last week, beating Anderson 7-2 and Hanover 5-4. Junior Robby Woehrle (Avon, Ind./H.S.) won both matches at No. 5 singles and both matches at No. 3 doubles during the two conference wins.
