Sutton Coleman Places 8th Nationally to Earn All-American Honors at Track and Field Nationals

TERRE HAUTE, IN -- Rose-Hulman freshman Sutton Coleman (Lebanon, Va./Lebanon H.S.) earned All-American honors with an 8th place finish in the 400-intermediate hurdles at the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Championships at Marietta College on Saturday.

Coleman became the 35th All-American in Rose-Hulman track and field history and the first freshman since 2000 to earn track and field All-American accolades.

Coleman compiled a time of 53.94 seconds in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles on Saturday, after qualifying for the finals with an effort of 52.86 seconds on Thursday.

The effort also marked the 67th All-American award in Rose-Hulman athletics history and the 50th honor in the coaching career of Larry Cole, spanning throughout his time at Muskingum, Ohio Northern and Rose-Hulman.  He also earned the fifth hurdling All-American award in Rose-Hulman history.

"Sutton's goals were to get into the national meet, qualify for the finals and be an All-American.  He did that with a personal best time on Thursday.  The finals were a learning experience for down the road and it's a phenomenal accomplishment for Sutton to achieve this much as a freshman," said Cole.

Coleman entered the national meet with the 12th fastest time in the field at 53.15 seconds.  His seasonal marks rank second in school history, behind only the 51.63 time that four-time All-American Phil Reksel used to place fifth nationally in the 400 hurdles in 2000.

He was named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year after winning the 110-meter high hurdles, 400-meter intermediate hurdles and the triple jump at the conference championship meet at Rose-Hulman in April.  He also anchored the winning 4-x-400 meter relay team that closed out the team title.

Coleman previously helped Rose-Hulman win the Hoosier-Buckeye Invitational, an indoor meet featuring eight HCAC squads, by setting four meet records in four events.  He also earned a varsity letter as a football kicker and wide receiver last fall for a squad that finished 7-3.
