Men's Track & Field Report (Week 1) - Defiance Claims Dick Small Invite Title
GREENWOOD, IN - Defiance College kicked off the 2010 outdoor track and field season with a first place finish at the 15th annual Dick Small Invite. The Yellow Jackets registered 227 points, edging HCAC rival Manchester by two points. Bluffton finished third at the event among the seven competing squads.
Defiance's Austin Trivett (Defiance, Ohio/H.S.) led the way for the Jackets, placing first in the pole vault, javelin, and 110-meter high hurdles. Trivett also placed second in the high jump and accounted for 38 of Defiance's points at the meet.
Manchester's John Kimmel (Ft. Wayne, Elmhurst) placed first in both the high jump and the long jump to lead the Spartans. Kimmel provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III outdoor championships in the high jump, clearing a conference-best 6' 8.75".
Bluffton was led by the throwing efforts of Jason Fisher (Rockford, Ohio/Parkway). The senior placed first in the shot put, discus, and hammer throw at the meet, setting the top mark in the conference so far this outdoor season in each event.
Rose-Hulman and Hanover ran at the Rose-Hulman Early Bird. Engineer sophomore Sutton Coleman (Lebanon, Va./H.S.) was the standout performer at the meet, placing first in 110-meter high hurdles, 4 X 400 meter relay, and second in the 200-meter dash.
Franklin placed fourth at the Wabash Relays this past weekend, while Transylvania finished seventh at Berea. Mount St. Joseph also competed at the University of Cincinnati Early Bird.
This weekend's schedule showcases eight of the nine HCAC institutions. Manchester has the weekend off before returning to the track on April 3 at Anderson.
