RHIT Tabbed by Coaches to Claim Fourth-Straight HCAC Men’s Outdoor Title
GREENWOOD, IN – Rose-Hulman’s men’s track and field team has been selected as the unanimous front runner to win the 2011 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference outdoor championship. In a poll of the ten HCAC head coaches, the Engineers received 100 total points and all ten first place votes.
Defiance College will strive for its first title in school history, as the Yellow Jackets totaled a second-best 89 points. Franklin College placed third in the poll with 76 points and Anderson University finished fourth with 71 points. College of Mount St. Joseph finished fifth with 57 points and was followed by Manchester College (51 points), Earlham College (39), Hanover College (34), Transylvania University (19), and Bluffton University (14).
Rose has claimed the last three HCAC outdoor championships and earned the title at February’s inaugural HCAC indoor championship. The Engineers return the core of last year’s outdoor title squad and will look for another title in April. Junior Sutton Coleman (Lebanon, Va./H.S.) does it all for the Engineers and earned NCAA All-American honors in the 55-meter high hurdles during the indoor season. Coleman was also named the HCAC’s Most Outstanding Track Athlete after his efforts at the 2010 outdoor championships. Senior Derek Bischak (Angola, Ind./H.S.) and junior Jeremiah Edwards (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) each placed 11th at the NCAA Indoor Championships last weekend in the mile run and 55-meter dash respectively.
Defiance earned a third place finish at last year’s outdoor championship meet and will try for their first conference track and field title this spring. The Yellow Jackets return a core of talent from last season’s team. Senior Austin Trivett (Defiance, Ohio/H.S.) earned All-HCAC honors at last spring’s outdoor meet and was named the HCAC’s Most Outstanding Field Athlete at the 2011 indoor championships. Trivett competes in pole vault, jumps, and hurdles.
Franklin finished fourth at last spring’s HCAC outdoor meet and also placed fourth at the indoor championships in February. The Grizzlies return the HCAC’s Freshman of the Year from last spring’s meet. Sophomore Georard Mitchell (Indianapolis, Ind./Howe) earned All-HCAC honors at the indoor championship this winter after earning the conference title in the long jump.
The 2011 HCAC Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships are set for Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30. The event will be hosted by Hanover College.
The 2011 men’s outdoor track and field season gets in full swing this weekend.
