HANOVER, IN – Hanover College will serve as host of the 2011 HCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships this Friday and Saturday in southern Indiana.  Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won the school’s third straight HCAC men’s title last spring and will look for their fourth consecutive crown this weekend.  The Engineers defeated second place Manchester 176.5 to 129.5 in Cincinnati last April.  The Franklin College women won their first conference championship last spring, edging second place Defiance by 32.5 points.

The Rose-Hulman men enter the meet ranked No. 24 nationally and return last year’s Most Outstanding Track Athlete in junior Sutton Coleman (Lebanon, Va./H.S.).  Coleman holds the conference’s top marks in four events this outdoor season and has provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in three of those events.  The junior has the top HCAC marks in the 400-meters (48.33), 110-meter hurdles (14.63), 400-meter hurdles (52.69), and the triple jump (13.23 meters).

Rose will once again be a tough team to beat at Hanover as the Engineers have placed claim to nine events in the top performance list this outdoor season.  RHIT’s Derek Bischak (Angola, Ind./H.S.) holds the top mark in the 1,500-meter run, while Tyler Kreipke (Zionsville, Ind./H.S.) has the top time in the 5,000-meters.  Sophomores Collin Crowson (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) and Greg Lamore (Deerfield, Ill./H.S.) have top marks in the pole vault and hammer throw. The Engineers 4 X 400 relay team also is the top squad in the HCAC this spring, besting second place Franklin’s time by over seven seconds.

The Franklin women’s track team will try and defend their title this weekend at Hanover.  The Grizzlies return last season’s Most Outstanding Track Athlete as senior Heather Waterman (Shelbyville, Ind./Morristown) competes at the conference meet for the final time.  Waterman won two events last spring, claiming the title in the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter runs.  The senior has the top mark in both events among HCAC competition this spring and will be the favorite in both events.

Rose-Hulman’s women have posted five top marks this spring and will try and claim the school’s first outdoor track and field title after earning the championship at the indoor meet in February. Sophomore Liz Evans (Bicknell, Ind./North Knox) has the top leap nationally in the high jump and has led the HCAC field in the long jump as well.  Freshman Erin Cox (West Harrison, Ind./Franklin Co.) and sophomore Creasy Clauser (Crawfordsville, Ind./Southmont) have posted the top marks in the 100-meter and 400-meter dashes this season.  Cox and Evans are also members of the top HCAC 4 X 100 relay squad that holds the top time this spring.

The event will be held at L.S. Ayers Field on the campus of Hanover College beginning at 3:30 PM Friday evening and will continue Saturday morning at 10:00 AM.
