RHIT’s Bouagnon, FC’s Mitchell Named HCAC Men’s Track & Field Athletes of the Year
GREENWOOD, IN – Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s Paul Bouagnon (St. Charles, Ill./Burlington Central) and Franklin College’s Georard Mitchell (Indianapolis, Ind./Howe) have been named 2011 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Year and Field Athlete of the Year, respectively. Bouagnon helped the Engineers to their fourth-straight HCAC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship, while Mitchell led the Grizzlies to a second place finish on April 30 at Hanover College.
Bouagnon, a senior for the Engineers, won the 400-meter dash at the 2011 HCAC Championships. The senior claimed the title in a HCAC record time of 48.44 seconds. Bouagnon also earned a second place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.40 seconds. The St. Charles, Illinois native was also a member of the Engineer 4 X 100-meter and 4 X 400-meter relay teams that captured first place at the meet.
Mitchell, a sophomore for the Grizzlies, won two field events at the championship. He had a winning mark of 6.88 meters in the long jump, while also claiming the title in the triple jump. The sophomore won the triple jump with a mark of 13.71 meters.
Also receiving recognition for his efforts at the meet is Mount St. Joseph freshman Micquelle Burton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Deer Park), receiving the 2011 HCAC Track & Field Freshman Athlete of the Year. Burton earned third place finishes in the 400-meter dash (49.17) and high jump (1.83), while placing fifth overall in the 200-meter dash (22.91).
Rose-Hulman’s Larry Cole was named the HCAC Coach of the Year after leading the Engineers to the school’s fourth-straight HCAC Men’s Track & Field team title. Cole, in his eighth season as Rose-Hulman’s head coach, saw his squad garner 226.5 points to win the championship.
