RHIT's Derek Bischak Earns Academic All-American Honors

TERRE HAUTE, IN -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology senior Derek Bischak (Angola, Ind./H.S.)  has earned first-team Capital One Academic All-American honors, in results released today by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Bischak was one of 15 track and field and cross country student-athletes named to the Capital One College Division first-team Academic All-American squad.  Just 15 student-athletes were named first-team Academic All-Americans in a category featuring over 800 colleges at the NCAA Division II, III and NAIA levels.

He earned the 91st Academic All-American in Rose-Hulman athletics history and claimed the 11th award in the sport of track and field.  He also becomes the eighth different track and field student-athlete to capture Academic All-American honors at Rose-Hulman.

Bischak qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor and Outdoor National Championships this season, placing 11th in the indoor mile and 15th in the outdoor 1,500-meter run.  He also shared Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Track Athlete of the Year honors during the winter season and won four career league championships. 

Bischak holds the school record in the indoor mile run (4:13.84) and outdoor 1,500-meter run (3:50.76).  He also enjoyed a career in USAC racing, including a fourth-place finish in the 2007 Rumble in Fort Wayne won by NASCAR champion Tony Stewart.

In the classroom, Bischak carried a 3.88 grade point average as a mechanical and electrical engineering double graduate.

At least one Rose-Hulman student-athlete has qualified for a Capital One Academic All-America Team for 26 consecutive years, a mark that ranks No. 6 nationally among all institutions and No. 1 in NCAA Division III.
