RHIT Tabbed by Coaches to Claim Fifth-Straight HCAC Men’s Outdoor Title
GREENWOOD, IN – The Rose-Hulman men’s track and field team has been selected as the unanimous front runner to win the 2012 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference outdoor championship. In a poll of the ten HCAC head coaches, the Engineers received 100 total points and all ten first place votes.
Defiance College will strive for its first title in school history, as the Yellow Jackets totaled a second-best 87 points. Manchester College placed third in the poll with 78 points and Franklin College finished fourth with 71 points. Anderson University finished fifth with 64 points and was followed by Earlham College (48 points), Hanover College (40), College of Mount St. Joseph (32), Transylvania University (18), and Bluffton University (12).
Rose has claimed the last four HCAC outdoor championships and earned the title at February’s HCAC indoor championship. The Engineers return the core of last year’s outdoor title squad and will look for another title in April. Senior Sutton Coleman (Lebanon, Va./H.S.) does it all for the Engineers and earned NCAA All-American honors in the 60-meter hurdles during the indoor season. Coleman was also named the HCAC’s Most Outstanding Track Athlete after his efforts at the indoor championships.
Defiance earned a fourth place finish at last year’s outdoor championship meet and will try for their first conference track and field title this spring. The Yellow Jackets have received great production from junior Tom Postema (Defiance, Ohio/Tinora) during the indoor season. Postema earned All-HCAC honors at the indoor meet and was named the HCAC’s Most Outstanding Field Athlete for his efforts. The junior also qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in weight throw and shot put.
Manchester finished third at last spring’s HCAC outdoor meet and also placed third at the indoor championships in February. The Spartans return two All-HCAC recipients from last spring’s meet. Junior Zeth Baker (Waterloo, Ind./DeKalb) earned the conference title in the 800-meter run in 2011, while Eric Moreland (Modoc, Ind./Union) earned the top mark in the high jump.
The 2012 HCAC Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships are set for Friday, April 27 and Saturday, April 28. The event will be hosted by Franklin College.
The 2012 men’s outdoor track and field season gets in full swing this weekend.
