CLAREMONT, CA – Defiance’s Tom Postema (Defiance, Ohio/Tinora) opened his three-event showing at the NCAA Outdoor National Championships on Thursday evening, by uncorking a throw of 52.98 in the discus finals to take fourth place in the event and position himself for All-American honors.
Postema’s throw was his second-best effort of the 2012 season in the discus and earned five points in the team standings for the Yellow Jackets. Postema entered the event ranked third in the nation, after breaking the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships and Defiance College records in the event this year and will likely become DC’s first All-American since Brad Zarembski (2010) and the fifth NCAA Division III Outdoor All-American in program history.
Postema placed 18th in the hammer throw with a heave of 52.13 meters in his first effort on Friday.
The Defiance, Ohio native finished competition on Saturday evening, placing 17th overall in the shot put (15.56 meters).
Defiance’s Kim Bingley (Ottawa, Ohio/Ottawa-Glandorf) wrapped up her showing at the 2012 NCAA Division III Outdoor Nationals with a 10th place showing in the heptathlon. The sophomore totaled 4,506 points.
