Rose-Hulman Men Claim Sixth Straight HCAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships


N. MANCHESTER, IN – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men’s track and field team held off Franklin College at the 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships held at Manchester University on April 26-27.  The Engineers scored 202 points in the 20 events to hold off Franklin’s 142 point effort to claim the school’s sixth straight HCAC men’s outdoor track title.

The Rose-Hulman men had four event winners. Senior Tyler Hannan (Winchester, Ky./George Rogers Clark) claimed the title in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.58 and was also a member of the first place 4-x-400-meter relay team (3:19.30).  Senior Collin Crowson (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) won the pole vault for the second-straight year, clearing 4.56 meters to capture the title. The Engineers also won the 4-x-100-meter relay (43.09).

Franklin placed second in the men’s team standings with 142 points. Senior Georard Mitchell (Indianapolis, Ind./Howe) led the Grizzlies with titles in the 100-meters (10.95), long jump (7.09 m), and triple jump (13.68 m).

Two conference records were broken at the 2013 championships.  Defiance’s Tom Postema (Defiance, Ohio/Tinora) set a new league-best in the men’s discus with a heave of 56.27 meters.  Postema also shattered the hammer throw record with a B standard United States Olympic Trials qualifying mark of 65.08 meters.

Defiance College tallied 121 points and was followed by Manchester University (102 points), Anderson University (73), Hanover College (54), College of Mount St. Joseph (44), Bluffton University (21), Earlham College (16), and Transylvania University (2).
