Rose-Hulman Wins HCAC Men's Cross Country Championship

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. --- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's men's cross country team captured the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship Saturday afternoon. The Fightin' Engineers claimed six of the top 15 individual places en route to posting a score of 52 at the meet held at Manchester University in North Manchester, Indiana.

Manchester senior Blake Harris (Fort Wayne, Ind.) won the individual title and led the Spartans with a first place finish at the meet Saturday. The senior covered the 8K course in 25:41.1 and was named the HCAC Most Valuable Runner for his performance.

Harris earned a spot on the All-HCAC team which is awarded to the top 12 finishers. Also on the All-HCAC team was: Anderson's Ian Leathernman, Bluffton's Dakota Frost, Earlham's Gabriel Penk, Franklin's Clayton Brumfield, Hanover's Jacob Hedrick, Joe Rector and Hayden Veach, and Rose-Hulman's Alton Anspaugh, Walt Dearing, Kennedy Schneiders and Matthew Stevenot.

Nate Papachristos of Earlham was named the HCAC Freshman of the Year. He was the top finishing freshman at the meet placing 13th overall with a time of 27:04.2.

Finishing in second place in the team standings was Hanover with a score of 75. Earlham placed third with a score of 78 and was followed by Manchester (113) in fourth position. Anderson (114), Bluffton (118), Franklin (122), Mount St. Joseph (250), and Defiance (290) rounded out the team standings. Transylvania did not post a team score at the championship meet.

Rose-Hulman head coach Geoff Wayton was named HCAC Coach of the Year for his efforts in leading the Engineers to the conference title.
