Boxscore

LEXINGTON, KY – The Transylvania University softball team captured the 2010 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time since 2006.  The Pioneers defeated Manchester 6-2 in the championship game held in Lexington.

Transy completed the tournament with a 3-0 record behind three victories from pitcher Kendra DeArk (Jeffersonville, Ind./H.S.).  In the final contest, DeArk tossed a complete game and scattered three hits with two walks and three strikeouts to move to 21-4 on the season.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.  Transy scored one run in the top of the second and added three more in the top of the third thanks to seven Manchester errors.  Anne Broadhead (Booneville, Ind./H.S.) led the Pioneers at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored,  and a RBI.

For Manchester (23-20-1), Annie Hernandez (Crown Point, Ind./Griffith) led the offense in the loss, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI.

No. 25 ranked Transylvania improved to 34-9 on the season and advances to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the second time in school history.  The NCAA tournament begins next Thursday at regional sites to be announced Monday afternoon.
