GREENWOOD, IN- Rose-Hulman and
Bluffton earned a split in the first HCAC softball series of the
2011 season. The Engineers (7-9, 1-1 HCAC) notched a 5-3 win
in game one before the Beavers (8-5, 1-1 HCAC) earned the split
with a 6-3 triumph in the second contest.
Rose earned the game one win with four runs in the fifth inning, overcoming a 3-1 deficit. Sophomore Brianne Widmoyer (Elkhart, Ind./Central) finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI for RHIT.
Bluffton jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in game two and never looked back, holding on for a 6-3 win. Junior Emily Manahan (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run and two RBI.
Freshman pitcher Kayla Owens (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) entered the game midway through the second inning and finished with 5.2 innings of relief, holding off a hot Engineer lineup. Owens allowed three hits and struck out one in the contest.
Rose capped off the week with a pair of wins at home over Spalding. The Engineers posted a 3-2 win in the first contest and prevailed 7-3 in the second outing. Senior Kyla Lutz (Tennyson, Ind./Boonville) blasted a home run and drove in all three runs in the first game, while earning the win on the mound.
Senior Allison Faber (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) went deep in the second game, knocking a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Engineers continue the HCAC schedule against defending champion Transylvania in Lexington Saturday afternoon.
