Softball Report (Week 4) - Defiance Sweeps Franklin to Open HCAC Play
GREENWOOD, IN- Defiance
College moved into first place in the HCAC standings with a sweep
of Franklin over the weekend. The Jackets (9-9, 2-0 HCAC)
handed the Grizzlies a 5-1 defeat in the first contest and
completed the sweep with a 9-1 decision.
DC's Elizabeth Huffman (Edwardsburg, Mich./H.S.) and Marah Robinson (New Philadelphia, Ohio/H.S.) provided the offense in the 5-1 game one victory. Robinson got the scoring started with a two RBI double in the first inning, finishing the game 2-for-3. Huffman capped off the scoring with a three RBI double in the sixth inning.
Junior pitcher Shauna Bowers (Delphos, Ohio/Delphos Jefferson) earned a complete game win, tossing seven innings with eight strikeouts and four hits allowed.
After trailing 1-0 after the top of the second inning in game two, the Yellow Jackets crossed the plate nine times to earn the sweep. Freshman Stephanie Esquibel (Defiance, Ohio/H.S.) was 2-for-4 with a double, run scored, and three RBI as DC rattled off 14 hits in the game.
Defiance also traveled to Heidelberg in non-conference play during the week. The Jackets were swept on the road, dropping game one 7-6 and game two 4-3. Huffman turned in a solid offensive performance in the game one loss, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a home run, and three RBI.
Sophomore Katie Miller (Archbold, Ohio/H.S.) blasted a home run in the second game defeat, hitting a solo shot in the top of the fourth inning.
The Yellow Jackets face Ohio Northern and Adrian in non-league play this week.
