Luther Handles Anderson in NCAA Championship Softball Opener

EAU CLAIRE, WI - The Anderson University softball team lost to Luther University 8-1 on Friday in the opener of the NCAA Div. III National Championships in Eau Claire, Wisc.
The Ravens struck first with a run in the first inning. Amy Wuestefeld (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Katy Ogden (Beech Grove, Ind./Beech Grove). With two outs, Yardley Collett (Middletown, Ind./Shenandoah) drove in Wuestefeld with an RBI single to right field.

AU had a chance to extend the lead in the second inning, but couldn't score after getting runners on second and third base with just one out. The Ravens also failed to score after a leadoff double by Lys HEss.

After Collett's RBI single in the first, the Ravens were 0-of-8 with runners in scoring position the rest of the game.

Luther got on the board with a three-run homer in the top of the third to take control of the game. They added five runs in the sixth inning to seal the victory.

Wuestefeld led the Raven offense with two hits and a run scored. Luther had an 11-6 advantage in hits.

Sami Frazier (Greenfield, Ind./Greenfield) took the loss on the mound, allowing nine hits and seven runs in 5.1 innings ow work while striking out five.

The game was played in a steady rain throughout the contest.

AU (31-17) will play No. 1 Salisbury on Saturday in an elimination game at 11 a.m. (12 p.m. Indiana Time).
