Anderson Captures Third-Straight HCAC Softball Tournament Title

N. MANCHESTER, IN – The Anderson University softball team captured the 2013 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the third consecutive year.  The Ravens defeated Manchester 5-1 in the championship game held at Manchester Saturday afternoon.

Anderson completed the tournament with a 3-1 record behind a pair of victories from pitcher Sami Frazier (Greenfield, Ind./H.S.).  Frazier tossed a complete game shutout in a 3-0 win over Bluffton and added six scoreless innings in a 6-0 win over Franklin on Friday.  Senior pitcher Lauren Smith (New Palestine, Ind./H.S.) led AU to the title with seven innings of four hit ball in Saturday’s 5-1 win.

The Ravens took the lead with two runs in the first inning and never looked back.  Senior outfielder Megan Ream (Lima, Ohio/Shawnee) led the Ravens at the plate, going 2-for-2 with one run scored and one RBI.

For Manchester (22-17), Maureen Lund (Huntington, Ind./North) led the offense in the loss, finishing 2-for-3 with a RBI.

Anderson improved to 25-15 on the season and advances to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the third time in as many years.  The NCAA tournament begins next Thursday at regional sites to be announced Monday afternoon.
