Hanover Claims First HCAC Women’s Golf Championship

ANDERSON, IN – Hanover College’s women’s golf team held off their closest competition by 16 strokes Sunday afternoon to claim the school’s first HCAC women’s golf title and the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA championships to be held in May. The Panthers totaled a league-record 667 on the team leader board, finishing 16 shots ahead of second place Transylvania, who finished with a 683.
Hanover’s Molly Burpo (Martinsville, Ind./H.S.) earned medalist and HCAC Most Valuable Player honors for the first time, defeating defending champion Megan Foley (Lexington, Ky./Lexington Christian) of Transylvania on the first playoff hole. Burpo and Foley finished with two-day totals of 161.
Hanover College placed three members on the All-HCAC team. Courtney Martin (Indianapolis, Ind./Decatur Central) finished in a tie for fourth place overall with a two-day total of 166, earning the HCAC Freshman of the Year award. Sloane Hamilton (Mason, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) joined Burpo and Martin on the All-HCAC squad after placing sixth (170).
The second place Pioneers placed one other member on the All-HCAC team, joining Megan Foley. Junior Janca Millett (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) placed third overall with a two-round total of 164.
Joining Burpo, Foley, Millett, Martin, and Hamilton on the All-HCAC team by virtue of finishing in the top eight of the individual standings was Anderson’s Courtney Erickson (Howell, Mich./H.S.) and Franklin’s Brittany Brownrigg (Littleton, Colo./Columbine) and Brittany Stephens (Whiteland, Ind./H.S.). Erickson placed fourth with a total of 166, while Brownrigg and Stephens fired totals of 170 and 173 respectively.
Franklin placed third at the tournament with a total score of 693. Rose-Hulman was awarded fourth place on Sunday, shooting a 751. Anderson, Mount St. Joseph, Manchester, and Defiance rounded out the team standings, firing a 760, 773, 783, and 803 respectively.
Hanover head coach Wayne Perry was also honored by being named the HCAC Coach of the Year for the first time as the head coach for the women’s golf team. Perry was a six-time Coach of the Year in football for the Panthers.
