DEFIANCE, OH – The 2011 HCAC women’s golf fall season will come to a close this weekend, as the women hit the links on Saturday and Sunday to determine the conference champion. The winner of this weekend’s tournament will receive the conference’s automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship held May 8-11 in Angola, Indiana.
This year’s HCAC tournament will be hosted by Defiance and held at the 5,772 yard par 71 Eagle Rock Golf Club in Defiance, Ohio.
Transylvania’s Megan Foley (Lexington, Ky./Christian) tied for the individual title last fall and lost in a playoff to Hanover’s Molly Burpo. Foley fired a two-round total of 161, carding rounds of 82 and 79. Foley was the medalist at the 2009 HCAC Championship. Franklin’s Brittany Stephens (Whiteland, Ind./H.S.) holds the conference’s best scoring average this fall (81.4) and will look to earn the title for the first time. As a team, the Pioneers and Grizzlies placed second and third last season as Hanover claimed the conference title with a record total of 667.
The Panthers will look to repeat as conference champion as all five HC golfers place among the HCAC scoring leaders. Franklin will look to challenge their rival as the Grizzlies have four golfers ranking in the top 15. The blue and gold also claimed the title at the HCAC Invitational held at Eagle Rock Golf Club on September 25, holding off second place Transy and third place Hanover.
The Hanover trio of Brooke McKay (Carmel, Ind./H.S.), Becky Roberts (Avon, Ind./H.S.), and Paige Schroeder (Jasper, Ind./H.S.) will look to lead the Panthers to a second-straight title this weekend. McKay ranks third with an 82.6 round average, while Roberts (83.3) and Schroeder (83.4) rank fourth and fifth respectively.
The top eight finishers after the two rounds are complete will earn All-HCAC honors. The top freshman finisher after Sunday’s second round will receive the Freshman of the Year award. Action will get underway Saturday and Sunday morning at 9:00 AM.
