Franklin Edges Transylvania for HCAC Women’s Golf Title
DEFIANCE, OH – Franklin College’s women’s golf team held off Transylvania by 24 strokes Sunday afternoon to claim the school’s 12th HCAC women’s golf title and the conference’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA championships to be held in May. The Grizzlies totaled a 676 on the team leader board, finishing 24 strokes ahead of second place Transylvania, who finished with a 700 at Eagle Rock Golf Club in Defiance, Ohio.
Franklin’s Brittany Stephens (Whiteland, Ind./H.S.) earned medalist and HCAC Most Valuable Player honors for the first time, holding off teammate Avery Brown (Greenfield, Ind./Central) by six strokes. Stephens carded rounds of 80 and 81 to capture the individual title, while Brown finished with a total of 167 (85-82).
Franklin College placed three members on the All-HCAC team. Brittany Brownrigg (Littleton, Colo./Columbine) joined Stephens and Brown on the squad, finishing sixth overall with a two-day total of 172.
The second place Pioneers placed two members on the All-HCAC team. Senior Megan Foley (Lexington, Ky./Christian) placed third overall with a two-round total of 169. Freshman Jerra Kelsey (Paintsville, Ky./H.S.) earned the Freshman of the Year award with her fourth place finish, firing rounds of 89 and 81 for a total of 170.
Joining Stephens, Brown, Foley, Kelsey, and Brownrigg on the All-HCAC team by virtue of finishing in the top eight of the individual standings was Hanover’s Brooke McKay (Carmel, Ind./H.S.) and Paige Schroeder (Jasper, Ind./H.S.), Anderson’s Courtney Erickson (Howell, Mich./Hartland) and Rose-Hulman’s Emily Baker (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Leo).
Hanover placed third at the tournament with a total score of 702. Anderson was awarded fourth place on Sunday, shooting a 718. Manchester, Defiance, Rose-Hulman, and Mount St. Joseph rounded out the team standings, firing a 780, 783, 796, and 817 respectively.
Franklin head coach Roger Lundy was also honored by being named the HCAC Coach of the Year for the fourth time as a head coach.
