Lynchburg Edges Transylvania 1-0 in NCAA Opening Round

ATLANTA, GA - Lynchburg scored the game's lone goal in the 12th minute Saturday and hung on to post a 1-0 victory over Transylvania, knocking the Pioneers out of theNCAA Division III women's soccer tournament.

Transy finishes its season with a mark of 16-4-1. The Pioneers got into the tournament by winning the Heartland Conference tournament last weekend. Lynchburg, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference winner, is 18-2-2. The Hornets came into the contest at Emory ranked third in the South Atlantic Region and 20th in the nation.

Ranked No. 6 in the Great Lakes Region, Transy was playing in the NCAA Division III Championship for the second staight year and for the third time overall. The Pioneers fell behind early and were unable to find the net on offense.

The Pioneers had three shots to 16 for the Hornets. Transy keeper Kara Hansel was credited with five saves.

Lynchburg held a 10-2 edge in corners and outshot the Pioneers in the second half, 8-2.

Lynchburg will meet the Emory on Sunday at 1 p.m.  to advance to the regional quarterfinals. Emory is 15-1-3 and ranked No. 7 nationally after defeating Maryville 2-0 in the first game on Saturday.
