RICHMOND, IN – Transylvania University upended host Earlham, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon to pick up the school’s third HCAC women’s soccer tournament championship. The second-seeded Pioneers (16-3-1) earn the school’s third trip to the NCAA Division III women’s soccer tournament since 2006 with the win.
The Pioneers and Quakers played a highly contested championship contest with Earlham out-shooting Transy 9-8 during the match.
In the game’s 21st minute Elizabeth Schmitt (Ft. Mitchell, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) found the back of the net to give Transy a 1-0 lead. Natosha Boden (Nicholasville, Ky./West Jessamine) added an insurance goal in the 84th minute to lock up the 2-0 win.
Transylvania junior goalkeeper Kara Hansel (Florence,
Ky./Notre Dame Academy) turned in an
impressive effort, recording her sixth-straight shutout to earn the
HCAC Tournament’s Most Valuable Player award. Hansel
notched four saves in the win over the Quakers.
The Pioneers will learn their first opponent in the NCAA tournament on Monday. The tournament is scheduled to begin on November 11.
