GREENWOOD, IN - The 2009 women's tennis season will come to a close this weekend, as the HCAC Tennis Championships will be held this Friday in Indianapolis. This year's tournament will be hosted by Transylvania University and held at the West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis.
Transylvania University claimed the school's first HCAC women's tennis championship and will look to earn the conference's automatic qualifier for the NCAA tournament this coming spring by taking the tournament title.
The Pioneers (7-0 HCAC) have been led by Kelsey Fulkerson (Lexington, Ky.) at the No. 1 singles and doubles position this fall, posting a 9-3 overall conference record. Teaming up with Fulkerson at the No. 1 doubles position has been junior Katie Boone (Lancaster, Ohio). Boone has an identical 9-3 conference record.
Transylvania had four flight championships in last weekend's HCAC Individual Flight Invitational. Stephanie Townsend (Goshen, Ky.) earned the title at No. 4 singles, Kaitlyn Hizny (Owensboro, Ky.) won at No. 5 singles, Andi Mong (Chillicothe, Ohio) was tops at No. 6 singles, and Hizny and Katie Moore (Frankfort, Ky.) captured the No. 3 doubles title.
Rose-Hulman's Sam Danesis (Akron, Ohio) won the No. 1 singles championship at the HCAC Flight Tournament and was also named the conference's Most Valuable Player for the fourth straight seasons. Danesis finished 14-0 in conference play this fall. The Engineers earned the second seed with their only conference loss being a 7-2 defeat to Transy. The Engineers will meet Franklin (5-2 HCAC) in the semifinals. RHIT defeated the Grizzlies 7-2 in September.
Franklin College will have the No. 3 seed this weekend. The Grizzlies dropped two conference contests this fall, falling to Transy and Rose-Hulman. Franklin's Heather Pasek (Villa Hills, Ky.) and Chelsy Gott (Mooresville, Ind.) teamed to win the No. 2 doubles championship last weekend. Pasek also was named the conference's Freshman of the Year this season.
Anderson University (4-3 HCAC) lost three conference matches this season, losing to Transylvania, Rose-Hulman, and Franklin. The Ravens tandem of Alex Hammel (Anderson, Ind.) and Jessie Rigby (Woodstock, Ill.) earned the No. 1 doubles title last weekend in Indianapolis.
Action will get underway Friday morning with semifinal play at 9:00 AM. The championship match will be held around 1:00 PM Friday afternoon.
