Women's Tennis Report (Week 3) - Pioneers Control Destiny for First Women's Tennis Title

GREENWOOD, IN - Transylvania's women's tennis team took control of the HCAC standings last week with victories over previously unbeaten Rose-Hulman and Mount St. Joseph.  The Pioneers hold a game lead over Rose-Hulman and Franklin heading into the last weekend of conference play.

The Pioneers (7-2, 5-0 HCAC) earned a pair of 7-2 wins over Rose and Mount in Cincinnati Saturday afternoon and defeated Asbury and Midway in non-conference matches during the week.  Transy has posted seven straight wins since dropping the first two matches of the season.

Freshman Kaitlin Hizny (Owensboro, Ky./Daviess Co.) posted a 4-0 mark at No. 5 singles and a 4-0 record at No. 3 doubles for the week in the Pioneer wins.

TU can clinch the confernece championship with a win over Anderson or Defiance Saturday afternoon.

Rose-Hulman began the week on a high note as the Engineers earned its first ever women's victory over an NCAA Division I program with a 5-4 tennis win over Valparaiso University on Friday.  The momentum did not carry over to the match with Transylvania as the Pioneers beat Rose for control of the conference championship.

The Engineers will travel to Franklin for a tri-match with the host Grizzlies and Hanover Saturday afternoon to close the regular season conference schedule.  Rose and Franklin can both clinch a spot in the HCAC Tournament with a single win this weekend.

Hanover and Anderson remain alive for a berth in the HCAC Tournament.  The Panthers and Ravens each hold a 3-2 record with Anderson holding the head-to-head tie-breaker between the two schools.

The top four teams in the conference standings will earn a berth into the HCAC AQ Tournament held at West Indy Racquet Club on Friday, October 16.
