GREENWOOD, IN – The 2010 women’s tennis season will come to a close this weekend, as the HCAC Tennis Championships will be held this Friday in Indianapolis.  This year’s tournament will be hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and held at the West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis.

Rose-Hulman claimed the school’s first HCAC women’s tennis championship and will look to earn the conference’s automatic qualifier for the NCAA tournament this coming spring by taking the tournament title.  The championship was also the first in program history for the Engineers.

RHIT (8-0 HCAC) has been led by Marie Stettler (Edgerton, Wis.) at the No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles position this fall, posting an 11-3 overall conference record.  Teaming up with Stettler at the No. 1 doubles position has been senior Megan Chann (Columbia, Mo.).  Chann has a 7-8 conference record this fall at No 1 singles and doubles.

Rose-Hulman had two flight championships in last weekend’s HCAC Individual Flight Invitational.  Klara Schroederus (Glenview, Ill.) earned the title at No. 6 singles, while Sage Sackett (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and Melissa Montgomery (Alexandria, Ind.) captured the No. 2 doubles title.

Transylvania’s Kelsey Fulkerson (Lexington, Ky.) won the No. 1 singles championship at the HCAC Flight Tournament and was also named the conference’s Most Valuable Player for the first time.  Fulkerson finished 14-0 in conference play this fall.  The Pioneers earned the second seed with their only conference loss being a 6-3 defeat to Rose-Hulman.  Transy (7-1 HCAC) will meet Franklin (6-2 HCAC) in the semifinals.  TU defeated the Grizzlies 9-0 in September.

Franklin College will have the No. 3 seed this weekend.  The Grizzlies dropped two conference contests this fall, falling to Rose-Hulman and Transylvania.  Franklin’s Morgan Bright (Greenwood, Ind.) and Heather Pasek (Villa Hills, Ky.) have led the way for the blue and gold this fall.  Bright stands 11-4 overall at No. 1 singles and doubles, while Pasek has posted a 12-3 record at No. 2 singles and doubles.

Manchester College (5-3 HCAC) lost three conference matches this season, losing to Rose-Hulman, Transylvania, and Franklin.  The Spartans’ Brandy Leeper (Bremen, Ind.) earned the No. 5 singles title last weekend in Indianapolis.  Leeper posted an 11-3 overall record this fall at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Action will get underway Friday morning with semifinal play at 9:00 AM.  The championship match will be held around 1:30 PM Friday afternoon.
