Women's Tennis Report (Week 5) - Conference Race Heats Up Heading Into Final Week

GREENWOOD, IN - Transylvania and Hanover each moved to 5-0 in conference play, setting up this afternoon's clash at Hanover with a possible conference title on the line.  The Pioneers (6-0, 5-0 HCAC) have Hanover, Anderson, and Franklin on the schedule, while the Panthers (8-3, 5-0 HCAC) have yet to face Transy, Manchester, or Franklin.

Transy posted a pair of 9-0 wins over Mount St. Joseph and Defiance last week to lock up a spot in the league tourney.

Sophomore Claire Mielcarek (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) was perfect in TU’s 9-0 sweep of Defiance, winning 8-0 at No. 1 doubles and 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.  In Transy’s 9-0 win over Mount St. Joseph, Mielcarek earned an 8-2 win in doubles and a 6-3, 6-1 singles victory.

The sophomore is undefeated in singles and doubles action during league play this fall.

Hanover slipped past Rose-Hulman 5-4 in its only action last week.  The Panthers and Engineers (5-2, 4-2 HCAC) have both locked up a bid in the league tournament.

Franklin College (6-3, 5-1 HCAC) controls its destiny to earn a second straight league title.  The Grizzlies swept Earlham 9-0 last week and have yet to face both league unbeatens Hanover and Transylvania.

Two tournament spots remain open as Anderson and Manchester look to lock up a spot with a single win or an Earlham loss.  The Ravens (5-3, 3-2 HCAC) can earn a spot with a win over Rose-Hulman or Transy, while the Spartans (5-7, 3-4 HCAC) look for a win over HC on Saturday.

The HCAC regular season concludes on October 16 when Hanover visits Franklin.  The HCAC tournament will take place at West Indy Racquet Club in Indianapolis on October 19-20.
