INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's women's tennis team capped off the season in impressive fashion, claiming the school's second Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship on Sunday afternoon. The Fightin' Engineers earned the second seed after completing the regular season with a 7-1 mark against league competition.
Rose- Hulman posted a 5-2 win over No. 3 seed Franklin before beating No. 1 Hanover in a marathon 5-4 match to earn the championship and the conference's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Division III tournament.
In Sunday's championship match with Hanover, the Fightin' Engineers posted a 5-4 victory at West Indy Racquet Club. Rose-Hulman earned wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions. Anna Thompson (Anderson, S.C. / Christ Church Episcopal) and Naomi Bhagat (Waukesha, Wisc. / New Berlin West) knocked off Meghan Farrell (Indianapolis, Ind. / Cathedral) and Tori Schwartz (Nappanee, Ind. / Northwood) of Hanover at No. 1 doubles 8-6. Mackenzie Spicer (Indianapolis, Ind. / North Central) and Susan Winternheimer (Indianapolis, Ind. / Bishop Chatard) of Hanover notched an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Bella Evans (Mission Viejo, Calif. / Tesoro) and Linde Schaffer (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Eagan). Sydney Short (Langley, Va. / Grafton) and Kyla Jarvis (Terre Haute, Ind. / North Vigo) helped lead the Engineers to a 2-1 lead over the Panthers before singles with an 8-3 victory over Cami Jones (Richmond, Ind. / Richmond) and Lizzy Katzenberger (Crawfordsville, Ind. / Crawfordsville) at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Rose-Hulman earned wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Evans collected a win at No. 2 singles over Cami Jones 6-4, 6-1. Bhagat defeated Farrell at No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 6-2. Lauren Edwards (Franklin, Ind. / Franklin) claimed the clinching match with a 1-6, 6-3 (6-1) victory over Winternheimer at No. 4 singles.
Hanover's victories came at No. 1, No. 5, and No. 6 singles. Spicer beat Thompson 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, Schwartz defeated Becca Stanley (New Whiteland, Ind. / Whiteland) 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles, and Katzenberger defeated Schaffer 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
Rose-Hulman's Anna Thompson was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player for her efforts this weekend.
With claiming the tournament title, Rose-Hulman has earned the conference's automatic bid to play in the NCAA Division III tennis championships this spring.
