CINCINNATI, OH – The College of Mount St. Joseph will serve as host of the 2010 HCAC Track and Field Championships this Friday and Saturday in Cincinnati. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won the school’s second straight HCAC men’s title last spring and will look for their third consecutive crown this weekend. The Engineers defeated second place Manchester 191 to 138.5 in Terre Haute last April. The Manchester women won their first conference championship last spring, edging second place Defiance and third place Franklin by only three points.
The Rose-Hulman men will rely on the success of sophomore Sutton Coleman (Lebanon, Va./H.S.) who was named the HCAC Freshman of the Year after earning three titles last spring. Coleman holds the conference’s top times in the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles and boasts the top leap in the triple jump this spring. Coleman has also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in both hurdle events, posting a time of 14.74 in the 110-meters and 53.45 in the 400-meters.
Rose will be a tough team to beat in Cincinnati as the Engineers have placed claim to seven events in the top performance list this outdoor season. RHIT’s Derek Bischak (Angola, Ind./H.S.) holds the top mark in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter runs, while Tyler Kreipke (Zionsville, Ind./H.S.) has the top time in the 5,000-meters. The Engineers 4 X 400 relay team also is the top squad in the HCAC this spring, besting second place Manchester’s time by over five seconds.
The Manchester women’s track team will try and defend their title this weekend at Mount. The Spartans only won two events in last year’s championship, but both athletes return this weekend. Jessi Bremer (Howe, Ind./Prairie Heights) earned the title in the 400-meters, while Emma Weiler (Auburn, Ind./DeKalb) was tops in the high jump. Junior Kailey Honn (Westfield, Ind./H.S.) will try and dethrone her teammate in the high jump after automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships this spring (1.71 meters).
Mount St. Joseph’s women have posted five top marks this spring. Freshman sprinter Katie Jerek (Boardman, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) holds the top times in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes this spring and will also look to lead the HCAC’s top 4 X 100 meter relay squad.
Franklin College’s Heather Waterman (Shelbyville, Ind./Morristown) has dominated the distance events on the women’s side, posting top times in the 1,500 and 5,000-meters. Waterman was named the HCAC’s Most Valuable Track Athlete at last year’s meet.
The event will be held at Schueler Field on the campus of Mount St. Joseph beginning at 3:30 PM Friday evening and will continue Saturday morning at 10:00 AM.
