Franklin Women Claim First HCAC Track & Field Championship

CINCINNATI, OH – The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men’s track and field team held off Manchester at the 2010 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships held at Mount St. Joseph on April 30-May 1.  The Engineers scored 176.5 points in the 20 events to hold off Manchester’s 129.5 point effort to claim the school’s third straight HCAC men’s track title.  The Franklin women’s track team earned their first track and field title in school history, holding off Defiance in a highly contested meet.

The Franklin women’s team won three events on its way to the conference championship.  Junior Heather Waterman (Shelbyville, Ind./Morristown) won the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter titles with times of 4:51.47 and 18:46.65 respectively.  Senior Kendal Paris (Franklin, Ind./H.S.) topped the conference field in the javelin throw, clearing a league-best 34.19 meters. 

Two conference records were broken at the 2010 championships.  Manchester’s Jessica Bremer (Howe, Ind./Prairie Heights) set a new league-best in the women’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.85.  Rose-Hulman’s Tanya Colonna (Brecksville, Ohio/H.S.) set the new mark in the women’s pole vault, clearing 3.20 meters.

Defiance finished second in the women team standings with 121.5 points. Manchester placed third with 117 points. Mount St. Joseph finished fourth with 110.5 points and was followed by Rose-Hulman (105 points), Hanover (74), Anderson (43), Bluffton (38), and Transylvania (16).
