GREENWOOD, IN – Franklin College’s women’s track and field team has been selected as the front runner to win the 2011 inaugural Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference indoor championship. The Grizzlies held off second place Mount St. Joseph by 12 points, receiving seven first place votes in a poll of the conference’s ten head coaches.
Mount St. Joseph will look to claim the indoor championship at the meet this February, as the Lions totaled a second-best 84 points and one first place vote. Manchester College placed third in the poll with 75 points and one first place vote. Defiance College finished fourth with 74 points and the final first place vote and was followed by Rose-Hulman (64 points), Hanover College (55), Anderson University (36), Transylvania University (29), Earlham College (22), and Bluffton University (15).
Franklin earned its first women’s track and field championship last spring at the HCAC outdoor championships. The Grizzlies will look to earn the title at the inaugural HCAC indoor championships on February 19 at Anderson University. Franklin returns the HCAC’s Most Outstanding Track Athlete from last year’s outdoor season as senior Heather Waterman (Shelbyville, Ind./Morristown) competes for the final season. Waterman will run in the 800-meters, mile run, and 5,000-meters this indoor season.
Mount St. Joseph placed fourth at the 2010 HCAC outdoor championships and will look to move up the standings this indoor season. Junior Lauren Hastings (Okeana, Ohio/Ross) returns after earning the HCAC’s Most Outstanding Field Athlete at the 2010 outdoor championships. Hastings will compete in the long jump and triple jump this indoor season after earning both titles outdoors last spring.
After a third place finish at last spring’s outdoor championships, Manchester College has been selected to place third at the upcoming indoor championships. The Spartans will turn to 2010 All-HCAC member Jessica Bremer (Howe, Ind./Prairie Heights) to lead the way this winter. The senior will compete this indoor season in the 800-meters and 1,500-meters.
The 2011 HCAC Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships are set for Saturday, February 19 at Anderson University.
The 2011 women’s indoor track and field season gets in full swing this weekend.
