BLUFFTON, OH- The 2009 HCAC volleyball tournament will be held this Saturday and Sunday, November 7-8 at Bluffton University.  The Beavers claimed their first conference championship and earned the right to host the automatic qualifier tournament for the first time.

Bluffton finished the season 25-5 overall and 8-0 in conference play.  BU closed the regular season with 15 straight victories and has dropped only four games during that span.  The Beavers and Mount St. Joseph earned a first-round bye after earning the top two seeds in the tournament and will play separate semifinal matches Saturday evening.

Action will get underway at 1:00 PM from northwest Ohio.  Anderson (16-14, 4-4 HCAC) earned the No. 6 seed and will face No. 3 Hanover (14-16, 6-2 HCAC).  The Panthers defeated the Ravens 3-1 back on October 10 in conference play and also handed AU a 3-1 loss in non-conference action at the Hanover Invitational.  Hanover closed the season with five straight conference wins, while Anderson posted victories in their last three HCAC tilts.  The winner will advance on to play Mount St. Joseph at 5:00 PM.  The Lions earned 3-0 wins over both Hanover and Anderson during the regular season.

Rose-Hulman (20-12, 4-4 HCAC), the No. 5 seed in the tourney, will take on No. 4 Defiance (21-10, 4-4 HCAC) in the second opening round game at 3:00 PM.  Back on September 26, Rose defeated the Yellow Jackets 3-2 in Terre Haute to open the HCAC schedule.  The Engineers enter the tournament riding a four game conference match losing streak after starting the season 4-0 in league play.  Defiance has been hot as of late, claiming wins in four of their last five conference matches.  Bluffton has the right to play the victor between the Engineers and Jackets Saturday night.  The Beavers swept both Rose and Defiance 3-0 during conference play this fall.

Bluffton has won 15 straight matches after dropping a pair of decisions at the Mount St. Joseph Fall Classic in September.  Mount has won 10 of its last 11 matches entering the conference tournament.  Bluffton defeated MSJ 3-0 on October 2.

The championship match will be held on Sunday, November 8 at 1:00 PM.  The tournament champion will earn the HCAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament that is slated to begin on Thursday, November 12.
