Transylvania Set to Host School’s First HCAC Volleyball Tournament

GREENWOOD, IN- The 2010 HCAC volleyball tournament will be held this week, November 2, 6-7. Tuesday’s opening round games will be played on the campus of the high seed, while the semifinals and championship will be played at Transylvania. The Pioneers claimed their first conference championship and earned the right to host the automatic qualifier tournament for the first time.
Transy finished the season 25-7 overall and 8-1 in conference play, closing the regular season with a 15-2 record. Mount St. Joseph shared the conference title with the Pioneers after posting an 8-1 record in league play. Transy and the Mount earned a first-round bye after earning the top two seeds in the tournament and will play separate semifinal matches Saturday.
Action will get underway at 7:00 PM Tuesday evening. Rose-Hulman (19-9, 5-4 HCAC) earned the No. 6 seed and will face No. 3 Bluffton (22-6, 7-2 HCAC). The Beavers defeated the Engineers 3-0 back on October 23 in conference play. Bluffton closed the season with six straight wins, while Rose-Hulman lost four of seven matches down the stretch. The winner will advance on to play Mount St. Joseph at 5:00 PM Saturday evening in Lexington. The Lions posted a 3-2 win over Bluffton and a 3-1 win over Rose during the regular season.
Anderson (13-15, 5-4 HCAC), the No. 5 seed in the tourney, will take on No. 4 Hanover (20-11, 5-4 HCAC) in the second opening round game at 7:00 PM Tuesday. Back on October 22, Hanover defeated the Ravens 3-1 on the campus of Hanover. The Panthers enter the tournament winning seven of their last eight matches after riding a five-game losing streak. Anderson has struggled as of late, losing six of its last seven matches heading into the tournament. Transylvania has the right to play the victor between the Ravens and Panthers Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers handed Hanover a 3-2 defeat and earned a sweep of Anderson during conference play.
Transy’s lone defeat in its last 12 matches was a 3-0 sweep by Centre Friday evening. Mount St. Joseph enters the tournament after going 1-2 over the weekend at the highly competitive Wittenberg Tournament. Transy defeated MSJ 3-2 last Tuesday evening.
The championship match will be held on Sunday, November 7 at 1:00 PM. The tournament champion will earn the HCAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament that is slated to begin on Thursday, November 11.
