Mount Escapes Transy for 11th HCAC Volleyball Tournament Title
LEXINGTON, KY – The Mount St. Joseph volleyball team held off a valiant effort from host Transylvania to defeat the Pioneers, 25-20, 25-14, 21-25, 15-25, 15-8, on November 7 to claim its eleventh Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament title. The second-seeded Lions (22-10) will advance to the NCAA Division III tournament by virtue of claiming the conference’s automatic bid.
Against the Pioneers, senior Jamie Grauvogel (Cleves, Ohio/Harrison) led the way with 21 kills, six digs, and one service ace.
Junior Kat Roedig (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) added 12 kills and senior Lyndsey Waldman (Batavia, Ohio/Clermont Northeastern) contributed 39 assists in the conference championship match.
MSJ advanced to Sunday’s championship match by defeating No. 3 seed Bluffton University in the semifinals, 3-0.
Grauvogel was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player
after a strong weekend performance. Joining her on the
all-tournament team from the Lions was Kat Roedig and
Jaclyn Stenger (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills).
Stenger contributed a team-high 17 digs in the victory over
Transy.
The remaining members of the all-tournament team consisted of Transylvania’s Katie Ash (Louisville, Ky./Assumption), Blayke Herman (Louisville, Ky./Male), and Rebecca Luking (Louisville, Ky./Ballard), and Bluffton’s Heather Rodman (Mansfield, Ohio/Christian).
The Mount will take part in regional play on November 12-14. MSJ will find out their site and opponent Monday morning when the NCAA releases their brackets.
The finals will be held November 19-21 at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.
