Volleyball Report (Week 7) - MSJ Holds Top Spot in HCAC Standings
GREENWOOD, IN -The College of Mount St. Joseph earned a win in its only match last week to take the top spot in the league standings. The Lions (9-14, 5-1 HCAC) blanked Anderson 3-0 on Saturday and now holds a half game lead over Rose-Hulman and Transylvania in the standings.
Senior middle hitter Kat Roedig (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) led the Lions against Anderson. Roedig had 11 kills and a .280 hitting percentage, while adding four block assists, three digs, an assist, and a service ace.
Transylvania (16-9, 4-1 HCAC) fell into second place after posting a split in HCAC tilts last week. The Pioneers dropped a 3-1 decision to Bluffton and handed Defiance and 3-2 defeat over the weekend. Transy also earned a 3-1 non-conference win over Kentucky Christian Saturday afternoon.
Rose-Hulman (17-7, 4-1 HCAC) sits alongside Transylvania in the conference standings. The Engineers took a break from league play last week and took part in the Calvin Invitational. Rose posted a 3-1 record at the event, defeating Illinois Wesleyan, Kalamazoo, and Albion.
Hanover (15-8, 5-2 HCAC) remained in the championship hunt with wins over Defiance and Bluffton over the weekend. Senior outside hitter Abby Merritt (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) led the Panthers in the victories, totaling 12 kills and 12 digs in a three-game sweep of Defiance Friday evening and adding 13 kills, 15 digs, four blocks, and an assist in Hanover's 3-1 win over Bluffton Saturday.
Bluffton (16-9, 4-2 HCAC) stands one game behind the league leaders in the loss column, following a 3-1 loss to Hanover. The Beavers defeated Transylvania 3-2 in Lexington Friday evening.
