Volleyball Report (Week 9) - Defiance Moves One Win Away From 1st HCAC Title

GREENWOOD, IN -Defiance College ran its win streak to 10-straight after a 3-0 week.  The Yellow Jackets (21-5, 7-0 HCAC) swept Anderson and Rose-Hulman to move one win away from the school's first ever HCAC volleyball title.

Junior setter Alicia Kalik (South Lyon, Mich/H.S.) became the all-time career assists leader in Defiance College history with 2,703. On Wednesday, Kalik totaled 26 assists in DC's sweep of Anderson on Senior Night. Then in Saturday's match with Rose-Hulman, Kalik combined for 27 assists and 18 digs in the crucial 3-0 win. Kalik then came out and set the new DC record, after a 40-assist game in a four-set victory over Illinois Wesleyan.

Senior Chelsea Ludeman (Napoleon, Ohio/H.S.) was also tremendous during the week.  Ludeman totaled 30 digs and 10 total blocks, to go along with her 34 kills during the week.

Defiance can clinch a share of its first ever HCAC title with a win at Bluffton Wednesday night.  The win would also lock up the top seed in next week's HCAC tournament.  DC will close the regular season at Hanover Saturday.

In other action...

Transylvania (20-11, 6-1 HCAC) locked up a spot in the HCAC tournament with a 3-1 win over Mount St. Joseph Wednesday evening.  The Pioneers closed out the weekend going 3-1 at the Millikin Invitational. Junior libero Erin Hoffmann(Louisville, Ky./Eastern) earned a spot on the Millikin All-Tournament team, totaling 57 digs during the four match tournament. TU will close the regular season schedule against Earlham and Bluffton this week.

Hanover (14-13, 5-2 HCAC) saw its win streak reach five-straight following a pair of league wins.  The Panthers earned a 3-0 sweep over Franklin and beat Anderson 3-1 to clinch a spot in the HCAC tournament.  Senior Kylie Justus (Crawfordsville, Ind./H.S.) totaled 43 digs and three aces in two matches, averaging 6.1 digs per set.  Hanover will play host to Mount St. Joseph and Defiance this week.

Mount St. Joseph also locked up a tourney bid over the weekend.  The Lions (14-16, 5-2 HCAC) earned the bid thanks to a 3-0 win over Franklin.  MSJ will face Hanover and Earlham this week.

Two spots remain open in the race for a HCAC tourney berth.  Bluffton (12-16, 4-3 HCAC) can clinch with a win over Defiance or Transylvania or a single Anderson loss.  Rose-Hulman (13-17, 3-4 HCAC) can earn a spot in the field with a win over Franklin Wednesday.  Franklin (14-13, 2-5 HCAC) can enter the tourney picture with a pair of wins over Rose-Hulman and Anderson this week, while Anderson (7-17, 2-5 HCAC) can stay alive with wins over Manchester and Franklin.
